Marie Smith, PharmD
Department Head of Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Professor
University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy

Marie Smith, PharmD, is a seasoned pharmacy educator and health care strategist with over 20 years experience across diverse practice arenas. She has pioneered progressive programs in a global pharmaceutical company, healthcare consulting practice, premier health professional association/publisher, primary care clinic, and leading university health-science centers.
In March 2006, she was appointed as the Department Head of Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Professor at the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy. As an exceptional educator and innovative leader, she brings a wealth of academic and business experience to her position, along with energy, enthusiasm, and a strong commitment to enhancing the appropriate use of medications in society.

Prior to joining UConn, Dr. Smith was Vice President, E-Strategy and Integration, at Aventis Pharmaceuticals North American Commercial Operations, with responsibility for leading teams that collaborated with Medical Affairs, Managed Care, and Marketing on diverse initiatives including e-prescribing, mobile health, e- clinical trials, e-CME, patient and health care professional portals, medication compliance and persistency, remote chronic disease monitoring, and interactive disease web sites.

In her academic experience, she has held faculty appointments in pharmacy and family medicine at several institutions – University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Medical College of Virginia, Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and AHEC Program, and Rutgers University.

At the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), she held clinical practice and publishing leadership positions and was a member of the senior management group.

Dr. Smith is an honors graduate of the University of Connecticut and Medical College of Virginia Schools of Pharmacy, and completed a hospital pharmacy residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. In addition, she completed post-graduate work in global leadership executive education at the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania) and INSEAD (France), as well as a Fellowship in Change Management at Johns Hopkins University.

She has been recognized as an international speaker/ published author, received numerous professional awards, and served on advisory boards.
