134 STATE STREET

The Community Health Center of Meriden opened in November, 1991 in response to a request for help from community leaders. With a population of 53,000 people at that time, the city of Meriden had no source of health care for people with out health insurance. The needs were dire; in fact, after one early meeting at the St. Vincent de Paul Shelter in Meriden, CHC’s leaders came away so moved by the need that they committed to opening a clinic right within the shelter immediately. The clinic stayed in operation until the full CHC of Meriden site opened on State Street.
From its small beginnings as a one physician practice, the CHC of Meriden has grown into a major center of comprehensive health care in Meriden. Its medical practice includes adult and pediatric medicine, obstetrics, podiatry, infectious disease, chronic disease management, and specialty diabetes services. From its dental offices on Miller Street, CHC of Meriden provides full service dentistry ranging from prevention to treatment and restoration. CHC of Meriden gives special attention to the mental health and psychiatric needs of patients, with a team of psychiatrist and therapists available for diagnosis, treatment, and counseling.
Today, CHC of Meriden owns and occupies a beautiful, fully restored historic building in the heart of downtown Meriden. It retains its original commitment to the neediest residents of Meriden, as well a any citizen seeking excellent health care. In December, CHC of Meriden will become home to CHC’s “Health Care for the Homeless” team, a new model of health care delivery designed to help our most needy citizens.
