Connecticut nonprofit health insurance co-op HealthyCT has signed a contract with the Weitzman Institute’s Community eConsult Network for electronic consultations (econsults) between primary care physicians and specialists.

HealthyCT says it’s the first private insurer in the state to pay for eeonsults for its insured through this program.

The econsult program will allow primary care physicians (PCPs) to confer and share charts and films securely with colleagues in several specialties and receive answers to their questions within two business days. There is no cost to the patient and econsults eliminate wait times for specialty care appointments and support better care coordination by the PCP, according to a joint news release.

econsults are first being rolled out to HealthyCT members who see primary care docs at Community Health Centers. The program will expand to practices enrolled in HealthyCT’s Advanced Practice Medical Payment Model.

The econsults program initially will be available for referrals to cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, pain management and endocrinology.
